The link below presents a compelling argument for the increased use of food irradiation. In Jack DeWitt’s article he states that the CDC estimates 8.9 million people get sick, 53,000 are hospitalized, and 2,300 die each year in connection with foodborne illnesses. The estimated yearly cost to the economy? $15.6 billion.

It’s scary to think we or one of our loved-ones can fall victim to such a senseless cause that can be prevented. While the over-all chances of being amongst one of the unfortunate 2300 who dies is very low, chances of being included in one of the 8.9 million are pretty significant. It’s pretty ironic that the totally false fear that consuming irradiating food will make it radioactive and kill us outweighs the reality that irradiation can actually be a life saver.

I thought Mr. DeWitt’s article was well spoken; here is the link to his article.
